US guided thoracentesis

Strengths

Generally will need INR<2.0 and platelets >50K. MUST specify side (right or left). Also specify if therapeutic or diagnostic (fluid will be sent for routine lab evaluation unless otherwise specified). On site radiology nurse support.

Limitations

Additional Information: very low complication rate. Consider standing order if plan recurrent procedures.

Contraindications

Coagulopathy. Some anticoagulants must be held for procedure: coumadin held until INR<=2; lovenox held 1 dose or 12 hours prior to procedure; plavix and full dose aspirin prefer to hold 3-5 days.
