Test·CPT 74177

CT abdominal hernia evaluation

Order as

CT abdomen and pelvis with IV and oral contrast.

CPT

74177

Strengths
uses specific positioning and maneuvers to accentuate abdominal wall and inguinal hernias. IV and oral contrast preferred for complete evaluation.
Limitations
Consider abdominal ultrasound if just to screen for hernia. Cheaper test and very sensitive, but may not be able to delineate full extent of involvement.
Contraindications
1) Allergy to contrast, but we will premedicate patient as necessary; 2) IV contrast will be dose-adjusted dependent upon creatinine clearance.

Patient preparation

NPO 4 hours, but can take meds with small sip of water.
