CTA for renal artery stenosis

Order as

CTA abdomen with and without IV contrast.

Strengths: CTA very good. Less artifact than MRA. Can assess type and severity of plaque and provide accurate measurement of stenosis fro preprocedural planning. Includes 3D images.
Limitations: If only for screening for renal artery stenosis, consider ultrasound or captopril challenge nuclear renal scan.
Contraindications: 1) Allergy to contrast, but we will premedicate patient as necessary; 2) IV contrast will be dose-adjusted dependent upon creatinine clearance.

Patient preparation

NPO 4 hours, but can take meds with small sip of water.
